Gum Recession Treatment with The Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST™)
Gum recession is a common oral health problem with a variety of associated complications, including aesthetic concerns and increased sensitivity due to exposed tooth roots. A smile affected by receding gums tends to look years older than it actually is, and damage to the surfaces of roots can make eating and drinking a painful experience. With the Pinhole Surgical Technique, or PST™, our team can restore the gum line to its proper level without the need for cutting or sutures.
How the Procedure Works
Aptly named, the Pinhole Surgical Technique involves the use of a tiny needle (measuring only 0.1 inches in diameter) to access the internal structures of the gums without cutting away any of the tissue or creating a flap. Specialized instruments are then meticulously guided through the pinhole and used to gently manipulate the tissue, easing it over the exposed roots of the teeth. Special collagen strips are added to stabilize the gum tissue. The entire process generally takes about an hour.
Advantages of the Pinhole Surgical Technique
Prior to the invention of Dr. John Chao’s patented Pinhole Surgical Technique, gum recession could only be corrected via a soft tissue graft. This process involved the use of donor tissue, usually harvested from the patient’s palate. The surgery was invasive, uncomfortable, and resulted in a substantial recovery period.
With the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, our team effectively restores smiles more quickly, more comfortably, and more efficiently. The procedure produces natural-looking results that are permanent in nearly all cases. All of this is possible without invasive surgical tools or usually sutures. Because the doctor does not need to cut or stitch the gingival tissue, patients experience less bleeding, swelling, and typically only require minimal over-the-counter pain medication for the discomfort that follows the treatment. Often, over-the-counter medications are sufficient.
